# How to Play 2048: Rules and Beginner Tips
2048 is a simple, relaxing sliding tile puzzle game. It works on browsers and Android phones, and it is perfect for casual play without fast reflexes or competition pressure.

Core Objective

Your goal is to merge matching number tiles to create a **2048 tile**. Once you make the 2048 tile, you win the game. You can keep playing after that to build bigger tiles like 4096 and 8192 for a higher score.

Basic Rules

1. The game is played on a **4×4 grid**.
2. **Controls**:
- Mobile: Swipe up, down, left, right
- PC: Arrow keys or WASD
3. Every swipe slides **all tiles** as far as possible in that direction.
4. Two tiles with the same number merge into one tile of double the value:
- 2 + 2 = 4
- 4 + 4 = 8
- 8 + 8 = 16, and so on until 1024 + 1024 = 2048
5. **Important rule**: A tile can only merge **once per swipe**. A new tile created from a merge cannot merge again in the same move. For example, four 2s in a row will become two 4s, not one 8.
6. After every move, a new tile (usually 2, rarely 4) appears randomly in an empty spot.
7. **Game Over**: When the grid is completely full and no two adjacent tiles can merge, the game ends.

Simple Example of One Move

If your row is [2, 2, blank, 4] and you swipe left:
The two 2s merge into 4. The row becomes [4, 4, blank, blank].

Best Beginner Tips (Most Important Strategy)

### 1. Keep your largest tile in one corner
This is the #1 trick. Pick one corner (bottom-right is popular) and keep your biggest tile there. Do not let it move into the middle. Build your next-biggest tiles next to it in a descending order, like a snake: 2048, 1024, 512, 256 along the edge.

### 2. Use only two main directions
If your big tile is at the bottom-right, prefer swiping **down and right**. Use left or up only when you have no other choice. This keeps your tiles organized and stops your big tile from getting trapped.

### 3. Keep empty spaces on the board
Empty cells give you room to move. If the board gets crowded, you will run out of moves quickly. Clear small tiles (2s and 4s) before they pile up and block your big merges.

### 4. Plan 2–3 moves ahead
Do not swipe fast without thinking. Remember: after every move, a new random tile will pop up. Avoid making moves that will fill the board quickly.

### 5. Do not chase small merges blindly
A small merge may look good, but it can break your corner pattern. Always check whether the merge will mess up your big tile position.

### 6. Use undo wisely
Most 2048 apps have an undo button. If you make a bad swipe that moves your largest tile away from the corner, undo it immediately.

### 7. Stay calm
2048 mixes skill with a little luck from random new tiles. If you lose, start a fresh game and try again. It is meant to be relaxing, not stressful.

Common Mistakes New Players Make

- Moving the largest tile out of the corner
- Swiping randomly in all directions
- Letting too many small 2s and 4s fill the board
- Trying to merge tiles in the same swipe more than once
